Hakuba and Myoko are the two areas most frequently compared by Australian ski property buyers. Both offer world-class powder, reasonable access from Tokyo, and established foreign buyer communities. But they suit different profiles.
Hakuba is 67 minutes from Matsumoto Airport or roughly 4 hours by road from Tokyo. Myoko is 105 minutes from Niigata Airport, with excellent Shinkansen access to Joetsu-Myoko station followed by a 20-minute shuttle.
Hakuba commands premium prices, with resort-area properties starting around ¥25M and quality chalets from ¥40M. Myoko offers significantly more affordable entry points, with detached houses near ski areas available from ¥10M to ¥25M.
Both areas receive heavy snowfall. Myoko consistently receives some of the highest snowfall totals in Japan. Hakuba offers more vertical terrain and variety of runs. For pure powder hunting, Myoko is hard to beat on value.
Choose Hakuba if you want established infrastructure, international restaurants, and are comfortable with premium prices. Choose Myoko if you prioritise powder quality, value for money, and a more authentically Japanese experience.
