- MichelleAnd then I've even sort of set it up so that, like, with our Wise card… because I was thinking, how do we,
- that seemed to be a concern for the agent, about how we were going to do our bank transfers and
- things like that when we don't have a Japanese bank account. So, so far, I've done everything
- through, like, a Wise account. And that was my intention too, that if we did find someone local
- to caretake the house, obviously if there was any expenses or whatever, I thought I could either
- transfer to their account, or leave them a card that had, you know, a small amount of money on it,
- that they could pay for things or whatever, and handle it that way. And I think that would be
- manageable. Those little logistic things that, when you own a property remotely,
- you just need to have a little bit of a think about.

The practical arrangements are still taking shape. Michelle is looking for someone local to check and ventilate the home, particularly during winter, and has asked at the post office and City Hall. The council clears the snow out front; the roof may need clearing a couple of times a winter.
Money is its own small system. Without a Japanese bank account, everything so far has run through a Wise account, and the plan for a caretaker is the same: transfer to their account, or leave a card with a small balance for expenses. Snow, frozen pipes, small repairs and local payments all need a reliable relationship and a clear routine while the family is in Australia.

What this may mean for you
Remote ownership needs local relationships and practical systems before commitment. Buying is one decision. Looking after the home is an operating plan.
