- MichelleWe've been really trying hard to learn the language. So we've been studying.
- Our Japanese is not very good, but I at least try. And I find that the Japanese people,
- they seem to appreciate that you're trying, even if you're getting it wrong.
- So we really tried to make an effort. And then when we got really stuck,
- I would get Google Translate out.

Nobody in the family had done an exchange year or a teaching stint in Japan. They study, their Japanese is not very good, and Michelle finds that people appreciate the effort even when she gets it wrong. Her daughter is about to start Japanese at school.
She bought a course in real-life Japanese rather than textbook Japanese. When both sides get stuck, both sides reach for their translation apps, which are not always accurate either, and you work around it. That is how two hours in a coffee shop with an elderly couple happened.
